As part of the development of an overall corporate sustainability program, O’Brien & Gere developed Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) scorecard metrics for Keystone Foods, including those for corporate energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions. The program included initial agreements regarding inventory intended audience, organizational and operational boundaries, de minimis thresholds, and base year. O’Brien & Gere developed Keystone Foods’ corporate greenhouse gas inventory for 2005-2007 for over fifty U.S. and international food processing and distribution facilities, which provided input to Keystone Foods’ sustainability disclosure requirements to McDonalds Corporation.
More broadly, O’Brien & Gere has developed a three-tiered approach to sustainability services: Level 1 – Strategic Sustainable Program Development; Level 2 – Development and Analysis of Key Performance Indicators (e.g, carbon footprint); Level 3 – Implementing Sustainable Projects/Programs. Level 1 is designed to engage leaders within an organization to articulate their vision for sustainable development in line with other long-term organizational goals and priorities. Level 2 is designed to quantify the organization’s performance relative to the vision for sustainable development. Level 3 is designed to evaluate the costs, benefits, and implementation strategies for projects that will help the organization grow in a sustainable way. Application of the three-tiered approach with Keystone Foods has resulted in client service awards and praise from Keystone’s primary customer, McDonalds Corporation.
