Sustainability

Achieving economic growth. Protecting the environment we live in. Providing a better way of life. These are the goals O’Brien & Gere strives to achieve when developing sustainable solutions and services that meet the operational and strategic needs of our clients.

O'Brien & Gere starts by providing the underlying technical expertise needed to bring concepts to reality. From there, sustainability strategies are framed, which address both regulatory and market requirements. Then, utilizing a 360° life-cycle project delivery model that integrates core business, technology, and innovation, O'Brien & Gere is able to provide incremental and/or full-service solutions to assist clients in meeting their project goals and objectives.

O’Brien & Gere's approach to delivering sustainable solutions embraces the concept of sustainability as a philosophy that is cost-effective, focused on client-specific expectations, and developed with the vision of minimizing a client’s environmental footprint by decreasing risks and liabilities. The process, which often challenges routine conceptions, strives to produce outcomes that not only support new business opportunities, but that also increase asset values and improve community and stakeholder relationships.

Examples of some of the sustainability programs undertaken by O'Brien & Gere include:
  • Design and construction of air pollution control systems, and performance of required regulatory evaluations
  • Environmental cleanup activities and reuse planning at closed military bases and Superfund sites to reduce greenfield impacts of development
  • Brownfield site cleanup, redevelopment, and reuse strategies to reduce greenfield impacts of development
  • Green building and low impact design (LID) concepts in conjunction with LEED-certified practitioners
  • Ground water and soil cleanup technologies to protect water and wastewater resources
  • Watershed management via pollution prevention strategies that comply with federal and state clean water and safe drinking water laws, and support sustainable water and wastewater infrastructure
  • Development of technologies to convert biomass to valuable fuels, chemicals, and power in an effort to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and foster the growth of biorefineries and other renewable energy sources
  • Development of clean energy through efficient, clean technologies, including renewable, green power and combined heat and power
  • Development of environmental management systems that enable organizations to reduce their environmental impacts while increasing operating efficiencies
  • Greenhouse gas emissions reductions via the establishment of carbon release baselines and the development of reduction strategies
  • Strategic pollution prevention planning, performance of P2 surveys, and development of implementation plans
  • Stakeholder workshops within institutions or manufacturing facilities, or with the community at large
  • Maximizing the use of existing resources via resource conservation measures
  • Application of emission credit trading opportunities
  • Evaluation of recycle/reuse and material substitution opportunities to reduce materials usage and the generation of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes
  • Design of zero discharge wastewater treatment facilities at domestic and international sites
  • Development of storm water control options for reuse, and minimization of impacts to receiving waters
  • Restoration, enhancement, or replacement of impaired natural resources and ecosystems
