Shoremont Water Treatment Plant, East Filter Plant Upgrade

Monroe County Water Authority, Rochester, NY

O’Brien & Gere was retained by Monroe County Water Authority (MCWA) to undertake both physical upgrades to the East Filter Plant structure at the 150 million gallons per day (MGD) Shoremont Water Treatment Plant, and studies of water quality and treatment issues. The purpose of the project was to develop the basis for a master plan, which MCWA could apply to accomplish structural upgrades to the East Plant wing.  In conjunction with this effort, MCWA was required to address water quality and treatment process issues for the entire Shoremont facility in order to meet changing regulations over the long term. Structural upgrades centered on identifying and implementing a solution for filter floor failures (8 filters, 50-60 MGD). Treatment issues were related to the ability to meet changing regulations and to effect improvements to water quality/treatment processes that would minimize issues associated with treating raw water from Lake Ontario. The project was a recipient of a 2005 Gold Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York).
