The Jamaica Bay Eutrophication Study is part of the Jamaica Bay Combined Sewer Overflow Facility Planning Project being performed by O’Brien & Gere. Jamaica Bay is located at the southwestern end of Long Island bordering the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens and Nassau County. The work of this project was performed on the Bay itself, at the sewage treatment plants that discharge to the bay, and in the combined sewer system servicing the area.
The Jamaica Bay Eutrophication Study received a Grand Conceptor Award from the Consulting Engineers Council of New York State, as part of the annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The study, which was initiated to investigate the impacts that nutrient loadings have on the water quality of Jamaica Bay, was performed for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) under the direction of the Bureau of Clean Water and the Bureau of Environmental Engineering. The eutrophication study was a combined and coordinated effort of the NYCDEP and seven professional consultants and laboratories. O’Brien & Gere provided project planning, coordination, supervision, and implementation.
