Water Tank Interior Evaluation

United States Navy, Keflavik, Iceland

O’Brien & Gere provided project management for the field evaluation of a 500,000 gallon steel elevated water tank in Keflavik, Iceland. The elevated storage tank, which was constructed in 1953 and is owned by the United States Navy, is a 10-column double-ellipsoidal tank of welded steel construction, approximately 114 feet high. The evaluation helped determine the condition of the tank interior, exterior, foundations, and accessories, with the interior evaluation being performed by a diver in a full tank of water. At the conclusion of the evaluation, a findings report was prepared, and recommendations for recoating, repairing, corrosion protection, and maintenance were presented. Budget estimates, anticipated life of the coating and structure, and replacement cost of the tank were also included in the findings report.
