Lucent Technologies, Murray Hill, NJ
The Headquarters of Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill, NJ consists of two million ft2 of office and laboratory space for 2400 occupants on 200 acres. Utilities on site consist of a deionized (DI) water plant, chilled water plant, cooling towers, boiler house, and wastewater pretreatment facility. Lucent was facing potential Natural Resource Damage (NRD) liability in the state, and water conservation was considered as a means to mitigate this liability. O’Brien & Gere was retained to conduct a preliminary evaluation of the feasibility and possible costs involved in reducing the facility’s water use. O’Brien & Gere also reviewed some plant-identified water reduction opportunities for validity. These included elimination of the organic filter operation in the DI plant and upgrades to the cooling tower chemical management controller, which will be able to respond to changing water conditions in real time and provide a more consistent operation.
