State University Health Science Center, Syracuse, New York
O’Brien & Gere was retained to design the first hospital rooftop heliport in Syracuse to serve the Trauma Center at University Hospital, a component of the State University Health Science Center. In addition to the comprehensive architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical services provided for this challenging project, O’Brien & Gere also served as the owner’s representative for submission of documentation to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for project review. In compliance with FAA regulations, the landing pad was positioned to accommodate FAA clearances.
O’Brien & Gere designed a 3,000 sq.-ft., steel-framed heliport landing pad with the capacity to accommodate helicopters weighing up to 22,000 pounds. O’Brien & Gere designed the new landing pad with an elevator that descends directly to the emergency room. An obstruction-activated photocell lighting system illuminates the pad as incoming traffic approaches. The landing area features a hydronic ice/snow melting system that circulates glycol and hot water within the landing pad to prevent ice/snow accumulation.
