Every Challenge Has a Backstory

A bioprocessing company that develops botanical extract product for the food and nutraceuticals industry was in need of a new solvent extraction process (used to make an additive for baby formula) at its North Carolina based facility. The company looked to PENTA (an OBG company) to design a new facility for processing biomass through a continuous flow crown extractor using hexane in conformance with NFPA 36—the standard for mitigating fire hazards in the plant extraction process.

OBG’s Focus on Solutions

PENTA provided complete preliminary and detailed design and engineering services for the new solvent extraction process. The project included the addition of two new production buildings and expansion of existing plant utility infrastructure to support the process. Nearly 100 pieces of equipment and more than 150 instruments were specified, and more than 13,000 linear feet of process and utility piping was designed.

PENTA provided overall project management, self-performed the detailed design, and delivered an on-site project engineer and engineering discipline support during the construction, commissioning, and start-up phases of the project.

Results that Matter

The $12 million project has allowed the bioprocessing company to provide premier customized botanical solvent extraction processes under food grade GMP. This 18-ton-per-day continuous flow extraction process helped make its North Carolina location the largest custom extraction facility in North America, allowing the company to reach additional customers requiring customized extraction processing capabilities.
