Microgrid Interoperability: First Steps from Policy to Implementation

There has been no shortage of discussion, policy, executive orders, special committees, conferences, and natural disasters to enumerate the benefits of microgrids.

However, as we pass the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the two-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, the proliferation of microgrids is still seemingly trapped in a wave of dialogue and a limited number of projects that resemble the Department of Energy’s definition of a localized resiliency solution. The widespread implementation of microgrids will be driven by a clear and logical approach to addressing baseline attributes of these systems (i.e., self-healing, dynamic participation, and asset optimization).

In Microgrid Interoperability: First Steps from Policy to Implementation, a paper and poster delivered at the Seventh Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, sponsored by the IEEE Power & Energy Society, OBG’s Mohammad Mojdehi, PhD and Neil Webb examine an approach for one of the first essential attributes to be confronted in the planning and design of microgrids—understanding the parameters for seamless transition.

The Innovative Smart Grid Technologies conference took place on September 6-9, 2016 in Minneapolis, MN.

About Dr. Mohammad Mojdehi: Mohammad Mojdehi is a leading expert on renewable energy and distributed generation for public and private sector clients and utilities. His extensive knowledge of advanced power technologies helps clients focus on decreasing their dependence on large, centralized generation in favor of more reliable, local grids. Extensively published in his field, Mr. Mojdehi performs original research, modeling, analytical studies, and readiness assessments and evaluations for clients.

About Neil Webb: Neil Webb has worked in the energy industry for more than 25 years. His experience spans the evolution of energy markets from the vertically integrated holding companies of the early 1990s to today’s deregulated marketplace. During this transformation, Mr. Webb has been engaged by utilities, independent system operators, and energy supply companies to assist in strategic and operational functions of wholesale and retail energy markets. Mr. Webb’s recent work has been focused at the retail level, assisting entities with critical decisions involving energy products from the procurement of electricity, natural gas, and oil to the planning and management of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) products.
