Dr. Murat Utku elected as ASCE Fellow

Murat Utku, PhD, PE

Murat Utku, PhD, PE, the Watershed/Coastal Science and Engineering practice lead at OBG and a nationally-recognized expert in protecting, sustaining, and managing natural features, facilities, and infrastructure in watersheds and coastal settings, has been named a Fellow by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Board of Directors.

Murat’s work has focused on resiliency projects, since more frequently occurring extreme weather events like Superstorm Sandy have become the new drivers compelling communities and agencies to identify effective mechanisms for enhancing resiliency. He believes new and innovative approaches must be on the forefront to increase resiliency and reduce the risks of coastal hazards. By creating innovative solutions to solve critical issues, Murat has contributed to project savings for public clients via sound designs, negotiations between various agencies, and reverse engineering.

Prior to joining OBG in 2017, Murat held various leadership roles throughout his 25-year career in the engineering consulting field. He has contributed to the profession of civil and coastal engineering through sustained leadership in research, business, management, and continued involvement with engineering society activities, as well as through teaching resiliency classes to college students.

A member of ASCE since 1995, Murat is devoted to the advancement of the civil engineering profession. He also led the establishment of a local North Jersey Chapter of COPRI (Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute) and has served as Governing Board Member (Secretary) of COPRI since 2016.

Murat holds a PhD in civil and coastal engineering, a master’s in civil, coastal, and harbor engineering, and a bachelor’s in civil engineering from Middle East Technical University and Old Dominion Universities. He is a Diplomate of Coastal Engineering, a registered professional engineer in Louisiana, New Jersey, and Texas, and frequently presents in the field of coastal engineering at environmental conferences across the U.S., including the 2017 Clean Gulf Conference & Exhibition.
