OBG hosts SPARK competition with Drexel and Villanova universities

Think-tank style competition promotes innovation through STEM-related problem statements

OBG—an integrated engineering solutions company—recently hosted its eighth SPARK Innovation Competition, which was held in collaboration with Drexel University and Villanova University on November 10-11, 2016 in Philadelphia, PA. SPARK is a 24-hour, think-tank style competition created by OBG to promote innovative science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)-related problem statements. Hosted at select universities across the country, SPARK gives students the opportunity to solve real-world challenges addressing energy, water, and environmental issues alongside industry representatives.

In the competition’s second year in Philadelphia, more than 25 students came to together from Drexel and Villanova at Drexel’s Bossone Research Center to solve real-world cases from Aqua America; The City of Philadelphia; SDI, Inc.; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District; and Warren PSI. Guided by subject matter experts from OBG and its industry partners, the student teams ideated, developed concepts, and pitched their solutions to a panel of academic and private sector judges, including OBG CEO Jim Fox.

The competition gives students the chance to develop solutions that may be implemented, network with industry professionals, and improve consulting and presentation skills, while allowing OBG and its industry partners to gain fresh perspective on current issues and meet top local talent.

“OBG is committed to creating a better future by making a difference each day,” said Jim Fox, OBG CEO. “We do this by not only providing thought leadership and innovative and integrated solutions for our clients, but also by proactively engaging with and investing in a number of initiatives focused on areas of STEM education.”

In addition, OBG, together with its higher education and industry partners, identifies and supports a local community organization as part of each competition. This year, OBG contributed $1,000 to the School District of Philadelphia.
