OBG recognized with ACEC New York Engineering Excellence AwardsOBG News,
OBG received three Engineering Excellence Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York during the 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards gala on April 7, 2018 in New York City. Winners were selected among submissions from more than 60 member firms and judged by a panel of industry experts on a rigorous set of criteria, including complexity, innovation, and value to society. OBG projects were awarded diamond and silver awards.
Diamond Awards – Honeywell
OBG received two diamond awards for projects completed as a strategic partner to Honeywell in support of the sustainable remediation of the Onondaga Lake Superfund Site in Syracuse, New York, one of the largest and most complex programs in the country.
OBG was awarded diamond in the environmental category for the restoration of 400 acres of uncapped soda ash production tailings and other pollutants along the lake’s southwest shoreline and Nine Mile Creek’s shoreline. The project achieved hydrologic control of leachate generated by the site and discharged to adjacent water bodies.
This project included the creation of a 20-acre shoreline wetland complex that allowed Honeywell to meet compensatory wetland mitigation requirements and enhanced more than 6,000 feet of the Lake’s shoreline. More than 40,000 plants were installed, and approximately 60 species of fish, birds, and other wildlife have returned to the restored western shoreline.
OBG also was awarded diamond in the special projects category for the rehabilitation of 6,000 linear feet of stormwater culverts, up to 60 inches in diameter, as part of the lake cleanup and restoration project. OBG provided design and construction-phase support services for the innovative project, which included lining the culverts with cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) using ultraviolet (UV)-cured fiberglass liners. The liners created a water-tight seal that provided a long-term structural and sustainable solution to mitigate groundwater and seep discharges from the site located along the Lake’s southwestern shoreline.
This project supported Honeywell’s implementation of a unique technology and mitigate the potential for impacted groundwater to enter pipes and downstream water bodies, minimizing impacts to fish, wildlife, and community members. At the time of installation, this project was the largest diameter installation of UV-cured liner in North America.

Silver Award – Hunter College Energy Performance Upgrades
OBG, as part of a joint venture with Dewberry under contract with DASNY (Dormitory Authority of the State of New York), was awarded silver in the energy projects category for energy performance upgrades at Hunter College. The project comprised services for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) improvements at the Hunter College East Building in Manhattan. Through a proof of concept energy analysis, the team predicted an annual electrical energy usage reduction of more than 350,000 kWh per year, translating into more than $50,000 in yearly energy savings or a nearly one-third reduction in electrical costs.
The holistic approach to HVAC systems maximized energy efficiency and integrated system performance by combining replacement of older multiple systems with new sophisticated controls system. Automation of the HVAC system using the Direct Digital Control System provides real-time view of system performance and individual components.
